Health Care Accessibility
I have traveled the world, visiting both "rich" and "poor" countries, and have seen firsthand that the United States has some of the best doctors, medical technology, and hospitals globally. Yet, too many Long Islanders lack access to healthcare. We can, and must, do better.
For those who do have healthcare, costs can be prohibitively high. In 2018, excessive healthcare expenses forced 8 million Americans into poverty, and a recent poll revealed that 25% of Americans or their family members delayed treatment for a serious medical condition due to cost. Essential healthcare services shouldn't come at the expense of our citizens' financial security.
In Congress, I have worked across the aisle to lower prescription drug prices, maintain protections for pre-existing conditions, and shield people from surprise medical bills. I proudly supported the Lower Costs, More Transparency Act, which increases price transparency throughout the healthcare system and reduces out-of-pocket costs for seniors receiving medication at hospital-owned outpatient facilities. I helped pass the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which fully funds critical programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Veterans' health care while drastically reducing wasteful government spending.
I have also backed numerous healthcare initiatives that empower patients, including:
Seniors’ Access to Critical Medications Act: Ensuring senior citizens can access essential medications.
Support for Patients and Communities Reauthorization Act: Addressing the opioid crisis and supporting those in recovery.
Expanded Telehealth Access Act: Expanding access to telehealth services, especially for those in rural and underserved areas.
Drug Price Transparency in Medicaid Act: Enhancing transparency in drug pricing for Medicaid recipients.
HELP Copays Act: Protecting consumers from increasing healthcare costs.
By giving patients more power to make informed healthcare decisions and negotiating lower prices, Americans can access essential healthcare services without the burdensome financial repercussions.
Moving forward, I will continue fighting for policies that promote affordable and accessible healthcare for all, ensuring Long Islanders and Americans nationwide can live healthier, happier lives.
